After fifteen years of working abroad, moving from one contract to another, I finally came home. I hadn\u2019t told anyone I was coming. I wanted it to be a surprise. All I could think about was seeing my mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I left, she was strong and full of life. I trusted my family completely. Before leaving, I put the house and finances in order, left her money, signed a power of attorney, and believed she would be safe and cared for while I worked overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the outside, the house looked perfect. Fresh paint. A new gate. Well-kept landscaping. If anything, it looked better than I remembered. I felt relieved. Everything seemed fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I unlocked the front door with my old key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was about to speak politely\u2014until she looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a moment, I couldn\u2019t breathe. She looked fragile, exhausted, much older than she should have been. This was the woman I had worked for, sacrificed for, sent money to every single month without fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMama\u2026\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stared at me as if she wasn\u2019t sure I was real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy son? You\u2026 you came back?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She tried to stand, nearly losing her balance. I rushed to help her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that moment, my uncle\u2014her brother\u2014walked out of the living room. He was wearing expensive loungewear, phone in hand, irritation on his face that quickly turned into a forced smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s all this noise?\u201d he began, then paused when he saw me. \u201cOh. You\u2019re here already.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked at him, then back at my mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy is my mother washing the floors?\u201d I asked quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He shrugged. \u201cShe lives here. The house is big. Someone has to take care of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn my house?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot exactly,\u201d he replied calmly. \u201cYou signed the papers. Everything\u2019s under my company now. For convenience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something inside me snapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I pulled out my phone and called my lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStart a full audit,\u201d I said. \u201cImmediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room went silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truth came out quickly\u2014and it was devastating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mother told me how, after I left, my uncle slowly took control of everything. At first, it was \u201ctemporary.\u201d Then permanent. He told her I wasn\u2019t sending enough money. That the house was too expensive. That she needed to \u201cearn her stay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She lost access to the accounts. Rooms in the house were rented out. Business events were hosted there. And my mother became unpaid help\u2014cleaning, cooking, serving guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was told I was too busy. That I didn\u2019t want to talk to her. That I had moved on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She tried calling me. The calls never reached me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When my lawyer arrived with the documents, the picture was clear: forged signatures, stolen funds, illegal transfer of property, and financial exploitation of an elderly parent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a criminal case,\u201d my lawyer said calmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My uncle shouted. Claimed he did everything \u201cfor the family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when the police entered the house, his confidence disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is my house!\u201d he yelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cIt never was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They took him away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That evening, my mother and I sat in the kitchen. She kept apologizing\u2014for the dust, for the floors, for not keeping the house \u201cnice enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
