It all started on a Tuesday evening. Around 8:00 PM, a man in his forties walked into the motel. A girl of about eleven stood next to him\u2014skinny, carrying a backpack. At first glance, they looked like father and daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The girl didn\u2019t say a word. She just stared at the floor. The man signed the register and asked for room 112 for one night. He asked not to come in to clean and\u2026 not to close the curtains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next night, it was the same: same man, same girl. On the third night, Angela felt a sense of unease that didn\u2019t go away even after she went home. The girl looked increasingly depressed, and the man increasingly irritated. He was squeezing her shoulder too tightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the sixth night, she made up her mind: leaving through the back entrance, she walked around the outside of the building and peered into the window of room 112. The curtain wasn\u2019t completely closed. Only silhouettes were visible through the narrow gap\u2026 but those silhouettes were enough to make her knees buckle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She saw the silhouette of a man leaning over a girl. The girl was sitting on the bed, her shoulders shaking. Angela stepped back from the window, her heart pounding. Everything looked\u2026 wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the next morning, at 10:19, something happened that finally confirmed her suspicions: the girl was walking next to the man, clutching her backpack so tightly that her knuckles were white. Her face was pale, her gaze guilty or frightened. She wasn\u2019t smiling\u2014and neither was he.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As they passed the utility room, Angela peeked out. And for the first time, she noticed that the girl was barely standing, as if she were ill. The man was holding her arm, but it didn\u2019t look like concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Angela couldn\u2019t take it anymore. For the first time in years, she broke the motel rules and quietly knocked on their door as the man left the room for his car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHoney\u2026 are you okay?\u201d Angela asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI just\u2026 need to lie down,\u201d she whispered softly. \u201cI\u2019m feeling dizzy again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIs he\u2026 a good man? Doesn\u2019t he hurt you?\u201d the maid asked cautiously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The girl looked up in surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is my dad,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd he helps me\u2026 I\u2019m sick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And, as if afraid Angela wouldn\u2019t believe her, the girl unzipped her backpack. Inside were medical containers, sterile bags, and documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe come here every month,\u201d the girl explained, \u201cbecause there\u2019s a doctor here who does my dialysis. It takes a long time\u2026 and I\u2019m always weak afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At that moment, the man returned. He saw the open backpack, Angela\u2019s gaze, the pale girl\u2014and understood everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe was just worried,\u201d the girl said before he could ask. \u201cShe thought\u2026 you were mean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man smiled wearily, sadly, without offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019d be worried too,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s become so weak lately\u2026 Sometimes I worry about her myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
