Suddenly, the office printer seemed much louder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Slowly, he answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No one heard the voice on the other end of the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But everyone saw Daniel\u2019s face change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the slow and terrible realization that the universe had just pulled the rug out from under his expensive shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone in the office coughed to hide a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another employee pretended to completely reorganize their desk drawer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daniel stood there for a long moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he cleared his throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWell\u2026 I suppose I should\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cClean out your desk?\u201d she suggested kindly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The walk back to his desk was the longest trip of his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later that afternoon, the intern was sitting quietly at her desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A coworker leaned toward her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo\u2026 you\u2019re the CEO\u2019s daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She shrugged again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTechnically.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThen why work as an intern?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She smiled slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She glanced across the office, where Daniel\u2019s desk was now empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c\u2026is to see how people treat you when they think you have none at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The coworker thought about those words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then nodded slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because in the end, the lesson was simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kindness costs nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
